AD. This week, I headed to Haddon Hall in Derbyshire to see a new exhibition all about early modern magic. For me, the most exciting things on display were the house's abundant and varied collection of so-called ritual protection marks. From hexafoils to burn marks, each gives a tantalising glimpse of the fears and hopes of Haddon's inhabitants, high and low, over the centuries. Mercatum takes place in the hall, as well as the the Lower Courtyard, the Gardens and by the Tudor Stable Block.
