Ultimately, the role went to Auburn Hills native and Western Michigan graduate John Morton, who served as a senior offensive assistant on Dan Campbell’s staff in 2022.

The attrition on the Detroit Lions coaching staff may not be over. According to ESPN’s Dallas Cowboys reporter Todd Archer, Lions assistant head coach/running backs coach Scottie Montgomery recently interviewed for the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator position.

Campbell hired Morton as a senior offensive assistant that season. It just so happened to be Johnson’s first year as an offensive coordinator and play caller. He was only 35 at the time. Considering Campbell had fired Anthony Lynn just one year into his Detroit tenure, it was crucial for him to get the next hire right.
