After the structure was left in ruins for decades, the Italians who briefly governed Rhodes rebuilt the fortifications in the 1930s. Despite the loss of the original, the palace remains a masterpiece.
On the west coast, the ancient city of Kamiros also harbours the ruins of a Rhodian city dating back to the 11 th century BC.
