Recreational marijuana became legal in Ohio just over a year ago, in December 2023, with sales launching at local dispensaries in August 2024.

Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman, who just a month ago said he wanted to drastically change the state’s marijuana law, has seemingly had a change of heart. He has backtracked on at least some of his proposed restrictions after having meetings with the Statehouse’s resident marijuana enthusiast.

The sale of recreational marijuana has proven to be quite profitable for the state, closing out last year with a big number. According to the Ohio division of cannabis control marijuana sales throughout the state topped $242 million by the end of 2024.

Ohio recreational marijuana sales surpassed $242 million as 2024 came to a close. The state’s total recreational marijuana sales were $242,167,020, as of Dec. 28, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Cannabis Control.

Ohio’s GOP House speaker is changing his tune on the state’s marijuana law, appearing to walk back his previously stated plan to undermine provisions of the voter-approved initiative such as home cultivation rights.
