The DC plane crash that killed members of the figure skating community near Reagan National Airport hit very close to home for one Arizona coach.

Several coaches and skaters with the United States figure skating team were on the flight from Wichita to Washington, D.C., that crashed Wednesday night, according to U.S. Figure Skating. The flight is not believed to have any survivors.

Ilia Malinin flew to D.C. on Monday after the national championships in Wichita and knew that young skaters were on the plane that crashed Wednesday.

Reigning World Champion figure skater Illia Malinin, who won the competition in Wichita that his teammates had left from before dying in the plane crash in DC, posted on Instagram on Thursday, Jan. 30 that he was 'heartbroken' by their deaths.
