Sales of new U.S. single-family homes surged to more than a three-year high in April as builders lowered prices to attract buyers, but rising mortgage rates and economic uncertainty remained headwinds for the housing market.

The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that sales of existing homes fell 2% in April compared to a year ago.

Mortgage rates inched higher over the past week as Treasury yields surged, delivering yet another blow to a lackluster spring housing market.
