Multiple aftershocks have struck near the site of a deadly 6.9 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines that killed at least 31 people and injured several others.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA - According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.3 magnitude quake rattled close to Berkeley Monday morning.

The earthquakes both struck at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers, or about 6 miles below the surface.

Nearly all of the seismic activity since the spring was recorded in the Greenwood County area, where 18 quakes have been confirmed since Aug. 18, SCDNR data shows. The most recent also was the last earthquake recorded in South Carolina this month, a 2.2 magnitude quake in Coronaca on Sept. 26, according to the USGS.

Scientists were able to use the data from a fiber optic cable and a sensitive measuring device to “image” the Mendocino earthquake – determining the magnitude, location and length of the rupture.
