The village of Ruidoso is in the hearts of many tourists as it deals with flooding and its aftermath. What to know about what is closed or open.

RUIDOSO – Days after the most destructive flood in Ruidoso’s history, New Mexico’s U.S. Sens. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan were given a tour of the worst-affected areas, from the Upper Canyon to Ruidoso Downs Racetrack.

Days after a historic flash flood hit parts of Ruidoso, flooding is possible once again over the weekend. A flood watch has been issued for Ruidoso and the Sacramento Mountains through Saturday night.

"The main reason was the South Fork Fire last year that burned directly west of Ruidoso," Grzywacz said. "The soil wasn't able to absorb any of the rainfall, and it runs right down into Ruidoso. Normally, if you had that vegetation still there, it could absorb it. For the Ruidoso monsoon season, it was above average rain but not record rainfall."

Senator Heinrich said the increase in severity of climate events, like the ones happening here in Ruidoso with the fires and floods, has to come with a change in how resources and recovery efforts are allocated.
