Typically, there are two types of Home Run Derby participants. There are the burly sluggers like Pete Alonso, and there are the wiry elite athletes like Ken Griffey Jr. De La Cruz falls into the ladder category, but he also hits the ball harder than most of the players in that archetype.
Each player will get bonus pitches until they record three outs, which are any swings that don’t result in a home run. If a player hits a home run of at least 425 feet within the bonus period, it’s extended until they record a fourth out.

The lineup for the 2025 Home Run Derby was finalized Thursday, featuring eight of baseball's most powerful hitters. Current home-run leader Cal Raleigh is the +250 favorite on ESPN BET and theScore Bet.
Some stars, meanwhile, have already said they are not participating. Aaron Judge has long held that he will only participate again if the derby is held in New York, while Shohei Ohtani remains hesitant to jump back in after participating in 2021.
