Emergency crews are cleaning up after a storm bearing record-breaking winds left at least one person dead and more than a million without power across the island of Ireland and Scotland.

The young man, who has not been named, was driving a Ford Focus on the B743 near Mauchline, Ayrshire, when the car was struck around 6.45am on Friday morning and he has since died

Padraig Fahy, an organic vegetable farmer in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, said he "never heard wind like it" when Storm Éowyn struck. "I was genuinely frightened, I couldn't sleep during it," he added. Mr Fahy lost two of his nine polytunnels to the storm, representing damage to around 30% of his crop.

The storm had knocked out power to more than half a million utility customers by early Friday as it moved across Ireland.
